Firearms possessing no “WP” proof within the receiver but have affixed barrels with “WP” evidence mark, As well as the “Oval P” would signify that whilst it's an older receiver, the barrel was replaced immediately after 1905 by a person outside the Winchester repair shop. (in addition to verification by other barrel markings)

Im endeavoring to iron out in my mind a number of factors concerning the evidence markings just after looking through the write-up regarding the 1892 Along with the “Oval P” marked receiver, and other Discussion board discussions on this topic. Following 1905, Winchester began stamping barrels, and then receivers, Together with the “WP” Winchester definitive evidence.
Winchester (depending on PR dates) 1st commenced using the superposed “WP” Winchester Definitive proof mark in May 1905, and continued to apply it to most models from that point on. In my surveys, I have confirmed that date for the Product 1885, Design 1894, and Product 1897, And that i feel that Michael has verified precisely the same on the Model 1892. Winchester right from the start marked the two the barrel as well as receiver.

Since There was a good deal of discussion regarding “WP” and “Oval P” markings and it’s somewhat puzzling, at least to me. I attempted to listing the varying scenarios for its prevalence or what may be encountered (Im guaranteed I missed a handful of), to which I tremendously welcome remark.
Its a great day any time you uncover that minimal nugget of truth. I significantly enjoy all that have contributed to the topic. Chris

As I've read through, the barrels started to obtain the “WP” at all around 1905, after which you can by 1908 both equally the receiver and barrel have been stamped While using the “WP”. Had been assembled receivers and barrels proved like a unit (to obtain the “WP”), or have been barrels proved employing a take a look at receiver? If examined being an assembled receiver & barrel, I could have an understanding of stamping equally simultaneously, but at what level will be the evidence used, subsequent to the ultimate metal sharpening but before the bluing?

For barrels & receivers produced immediately after 1905: Receivers possessing the “WP” evidence but no “WP” or “Oval P” evidence to the barrel would point out the barrel was changed beyond Winchester utilizing a pre-1905 barrel.
To the best of my awareness, in case you find a pre-1905 Winchester by using a “WP” proof within the barrel, Winchester models but not over the receiver, any person other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
